What is Diem?
Diem, formerly Libra, was a fiat-backed stablecoin project from the Diem Association designed to enable fast, low-cost digital payments globally. It aimed to maintain a stable value by pegging to a reserve basket of fiat currencies and to operate under regulatory oversight. The project has since been discontinued.
Why does Diem have inflation?
Inflation would occur for a reserve-backed stablecoin like Diem if the backing fiat currencies lose purchasing power or if new Diem supply is issued beyond the reserves, causing the peg to drift from its target.
How is Diem inflation calculated?
Diem inflation is calculated by comparing the circulating supply from one year ago to today’s supply. The percentage increase in supply over that period is the annual inflation rate. Learn more in our guide: What is cryptocurrency inflation?.
